WELLBEING FOR ANIMALS

Marvin cat
Marvin, 18 year old cat

Safe, effective, natural flower and gem essences to support your pet at all stages of life.

Animals have always been close friends to human beings – as our lives become more stressful, so do theirs and our pets nowadays often manifest many of the “diseases” that we do such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. As we learn more about the role of our emotional health in the creation of all dis-ease, then it must be that when our pets are unwell, they also need emotional support.

Flower Essences work wonderfully with animals and as they have none of the filters that we have (well this won’t work will it – it’s only a flower essence), so they often respond magnificently and very quickly. It is often a good idea as well to treat the owner of the animal – as animals take on many of our stresses alongside us. So if you feel that treating your emotional health is important – then please also consider the emotional health of your “best friend”.

So when would you use flower essences with animals?

  • Rescued pets who have gone through much upheaval and trauma
  • Pets who are ill or who are about to have or are recovering from surgery
  • Pets on medication – to help relieve their bodies of the toxicity of the medication (i.e. after vaccinations and antibiotics)
  • During stressful times in the home – illness, moving, bereavement, divorce, separation due to holidays
  • To assist with terminally ill pets and/or those that live with serious health issues

Marvin’s Story

Marvin came to live with us at the age of 11. One day out of the blue we found a very handsome well fed looking cat in our back garden. He seemed to be rather intent on staying so after several days of him being there constantly, we left him some food out. And there was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. We discovered that his previous owner had moved just a few streets away, had come to fetch Marvin (then called Gee) several times but he simply turned around and came back to the gardens where he used to live. It was agreed that Marvin Gee should stay with us if that is what he wanted.

Marvin is now 18. Over the years Marvin has taken many flower essences to help him cope with everyday cat life. We learned that Marvin had been taken away from his Mum very early on as a kitten and this had resulted in him being a very clingy cat... continued essences to help him with this have helped enormously. He has also had a pattern of cystitis – so he has taken many essences to help him manage this condition. He has also taken glyconutrients for the past four years – a nutritional supplement to enhance the immune system.

In April 2008 Marvin had to have a big operation to save his life as he had large stones stuck in his urethra. Normally cats of his age are not offered this kind of radical treatment due to the risks associated with anaesthesia; however Marvin’s blood work was showing a younger cat. Our vet was very impressed with his results and said “Well whatever you're doing, keep doing it as it is working for him”

Marvin took his own bottle of flower essences to the vet’s with him and the vet and nurses very kindly agreed to put a couple of drops of essences in their palms and stroke him before and after each anaesthetic and also throughout the day during his week long stay in hospital. He had also had his flower essence put into his water. He was nicknamed “Buddha” by the vet as he was so relaxed and – in the vet’s words “He allowed us to do what was needed to help him”.

To everyone’s amazement Marvin sailed through his 3 hour operation and recovered really quickly considering his age and the severity of his condition. He had one hiccup – the stress of the operation and the week away from home tipped him into high blood sugar readings. Tests showed that he was not diabetic before the operation. We are now managing this at home without medication – and with focused flower essences, lots of glyconutrients and TLC!

Being so grateful to flower essences for supporting Marvin and the other animals we have had the pleasure of working with, we have created a new range of essences for animals called WellBeing for Animals… for ALL ANIMALS AND BIRDS, large or small, furred or feathered. Poppy - catPoppy

Hello I'm Poppy and Marvin has asked me to tell you my story. Well, a couple of months ago my left front paw stated to irritate me - one of my toes seemed to have grown a lump which I did my best to get rid of - you know the usual - licking, chewing that sort of thing - but it just got inflamed and irritated and bled all over the house. My poor well meaning human was at her wit's end (not a long stretch btw) and took me to the vet several times - under protest I might add. Anyway the vet said the toe would have to be amputated as it was refusing to heal - probably because I just couldn't resist giving it the odd lick every now and then when she wasn't looking. They thought it might be something sinister - even more sinister than the twin ginger kittens who insist on lurking outside my cat door. My human was giving me Healing Herbs 5 flower remedy at the time as I do hate going to the vet and since they had also discovered I have a thyroid condition we were back and forth rather a lot. Soooo - long story short – this flower essence lady sent me some Alaskan Animal Care Essence as well as a special exclusive Poppy remedy, to prepare me for the surgery and help me recover. My human was a bag of nerves about the whole thing (typical) but hey what's the big deal? The nurses in the vets applied my essences by stroking me with a couple of drops on their hands... mmmmmmm... lovely... totally chilled. Am convinced that's what got me through the surgery unscathed and alert with no after effects at all from the anaesthetic. With regular applications of both my essences and a helping of glyconutrients in my food morning and evening I was ripping out my own stitches within a week as I could tell my paw was completely healed. The fur grew back in about 10 days (not a good look that baldy thing) and now I am even having essences to help with my thyroid condition and erm... isn't it dinner time yet?. Oh the toe?? No don't miss it at all...

Basil - dogBasil - the very sensitive Collie Cross

Basil is a very gentle, happy dog. And very sensitive to the feelings of others. Sometimes to the extent, it seemed, of taking on their burden. This would become evident as his own behaviour would change, becoming withdrawn and very tired, instead of his happy go lucky bouncy self.

When his owners mum was dying of cancer, he would sit by her chair night after night and she would love to stroke his head. His owner was caring for her dying mum, as well as studying a course at the time. Often getting tired and stressed herself, and frustrated too, it was obvious that Basil was helping them both when at times he would look weary.

He had been brought up with essences since being a pup some 3 years before (having been an RSPCA rescue pup), and his owner knew he responded well to them. During this time a blend of essences helped him keep a healthy balance between his obvious desire to 'help' and sit next to the owners mum, to then be able to revitalise quickly and feel refreshed when he was on his walks and having his own time. When he didn't have his essences, if say his owner forgot for a couple of days, she noticed Basil would not be his 'normal' self away from her mum.

Olly the miniature dachshund - age 11 years old

Olly could barely walk. He was having difficulty with extreme stiffness in his pelvis and along his spine. He was on anti-inflammatories which seemed to help only occasionally. He was normally a chatty little dog but had become quiet and withdrawn. His vet had told his owners to prepare for the worst and that he would most likely have to be put down soon. His owners had become very worried about him and he was feeling weighed down by their emotions and concerns too. They began to play beautiful and uplifting classical music to him (rather than Radio 4 which they left on usually when they went out) ; they also sang and played with him.

After a few days of his specially prepared essences Ollie was walking much more freely and continued to do so. Ollie often joined in the singing with his owners with happy howls. Over time they were able to reduce his dosage of anti-inflammatories to a much lower dose. He came back for 3 further treatments and despite the vet’s “forecast” he went on to live another 10 months from his first visit.

Joy, the farm Collie

Joy was a rescue collie, found in a rubbish bin as a pup in Ireland with the rest of her siblings. She found her way to an organic farm in East Sussex through various rescue homes and unknown experiences. A very loving and gentle dog, Joy’s new owners began to notice her appetite decreasing after she’d been with them for almost a year. Their farm vet diagnosed advanced colon cancer.

Because of the trauma she had experienced for most of her life before finding them, her owners felt very guided to treat her as naturally as possible. They observed that despite the diagnosis, Joy's overall behaviour changed little which they took as a sign that she was happy to be on the farm and not be taken here and there for intensive medical treatment. They knew she was dying, and wanted to make her journey as loving and peaceful as possible.
They changed her diet to raw food pulsed into soups for easy digestion. At the time they asked for essences to help her, her mix indicated that she was wanting to ‘lighten up’ a little – and asked this of her owners too who were obviously feeling sad for her.

She was also having Reiki on a regular basis. Joy was given essences which were rubbed onto her lower tummy and crown, then stroked all over her body twice a day. Drops were also placed on her food once a day.

Joy died peacefully about a month after having her essences. She was at home with her pack surrounded with love on the farm she loved.

Barney catBarney - 17 year old cat

Barney first began having epileptic type fits after the sudden death of his sister when he was 11. They subsided for several years but at age 17 they began again with severity. Barney’s owners took him to the vet's who advised further tests and medication; however his owners wanted him to live as natural a life as possible and were very open to trying essences first.

Barney’s condition was stabilised by using a rescue formula of essences for several weeks - he went from having several fits a day to none at all... Barney was then given his own personal mix of essences to help him deal with the grief he was holding due to his sister dying; also essences to de-stress and help his "senior citizen" physiology deal with the challenges of this time of life.

Barney takes drops on his food twice a day and has continued doing this since July 07 when he first began taking them. He now very occasionally has mini-fits which last a second or two and is otherwise happy, very talkative and is actually rather jaunty for his age...

Hero - dogHero - 14 year old dog

Like many animals Hero hates fireworks and during the lead up to firework night gets very distressed. Hero's owners find that by putting flower essences into his food and water during this period greatly reduces his fear and although he still doesn’t appreciate the noise, he now shakes and cries a lot less.

Susie the cat

Massage therapist Karen Jefferies, whose cat Susie passed away a few years ago would like to share this story of Susie. Susie was diabetic and had insulin injections daily. “ I used the Australian Bush Essence Peach flowered Tea tree for Susie's diabetes. I also doused for the quantity of each dose of insulin, which was reduced by half by the essence. It also improved her state of health whilst Rescue remedy soothed her after trips to the vets. Great vibrational remedies”.

Sasha - dogSasha, the re-homed Collie

Sasha had had three homes in 18 weeks before coming to her current owners, home no. 4. Although not obviously mistreated, as a pure collie straight from working farm stock, she was on the bright side of bright, and it was clear that her very active brain had not been stimulated enough. Not only was she frustrated by this, she was immensely insecure at being 'passed on' this often in her short life. She had all the traits of a working collie - the nip reflex being very evident with her almost constant desire to bite her owners ankles to get them under her control!

Essences helped her feel comfortable and safe within her new home. Her new owners knew she would get settled in her own time, not theirs, and were prepared for it to take as long as it would take. Sasha's 'hyper hyper' behaviour calmed during her first month with the help of essences to soothe and relax her. She also had essences to help her focus on her training, which she picked up very quickly. And she began to let others touch and stroke her without nipping - her essences allowing her to trust their touch. The nip reflex also abated.

Her owners used essences with her from day one of her arrival. They also worked with some of Jan Fennell's approaches to training in her book The Dog Listener, in which she guides people through the natural pack hierarchy and behaviour of pack leaders in the wild, for you to mimic this with your own dogs. As so many dogs are given too much responsibility in their pack which leads to behavioural problems and the dog being frustrated, this helps them know who is in charge so they can get on with their role safely within their pack. Sasha's essences helped her feel safe to hand over this responsibility to her new owners and to let herself trust in their lead.

Des the ex show jumping horse

Des came to his owners as a 'rescue' horse, having done his time as a champion show jumper and was going to being put down.

His new life was with a family who were used to horses, having three others already. Des was taken on for their 14 year old daughter, an experienced rider, and novice show jumper. Within a short space of time, despite his experience, he was refusing jumps. He then began refusing to even get into the lorry to go to the shows (whereas at first he had shown great enthusiasm and happily walked into the (rather luxurious) transport). He also started to show signs of frustration in his day to day life.

He seemed to missing the way things were - the 'action' and stimulation he'd had, and going back to simple jumps seemed all rather beneath him! Not to mention his inability to 'relax' and 'be' with the other horses in the fields, having been held to a rigid training regime for much of his life.

After treating Des, he began to relax over a few days, and seemed to 'let his main down' in his new home. He would walk up to his owners instead of deliberately running off. He began to love the attention from his 14 year old rider. He certainly seemed to 'lighten up' and not take it all so seriously, having fun with her and his new herd instead of being intense or agitated. And he began to jump again, and has continued to do so, taking them both to great success.
